Nancy Jo GambacurtaNancy Jo Gambacurta was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y. She studied art from the age of 13 and graduated from MCC and Empire State College with concentrated study in both painting and sculpture. In her early years she was primarily a sculptor concentrating on everything from jewelry-making to concrete garden sculpture.
For the last 35 years Nancy Jo has been an acrylic painter. She has focused on subjects ranging from gardens to bathers, from African violets to landscapes. Her landscapes have been derived from her travels to the American West and to the Adirondacks. Nancy Jo’s paintings have a vibrancy of color, a uniqueness of style and a simplicity of design that communicate her emotions to the viewer and draw them into her world. In the last few years, she has taken up linoleum reduction printing and through this medium has enjoyed working in a smaller scale. This is a process whereby the artist uses one block, carved numerous times according to the number of colors involved in the design. It is called “reduction” printing because at the end of the process the block has been fully carved and cannot be used again. Her recent work is quite diverse. It has included subjects such as The Flower Girls, The Yoga Birdies, The Houseplant Series and The Warbler Series. She is currently working on a floral series that is inspired by her gardens. Examples of her work may be seen here. Nancy Jo can be reached at 585-544-3175. |
