Best of Show, Juror & Merit Awards will be presented to those pieces deemed noteworthy by professional artist judges. This year’s judges are Diane Castle Babcock and Laura Wilder. Artist awards will be presented during the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 3 from 2 to 5 PM.

As in previous years, there will be a “Meet the Artists Day” on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 11 AM. Several artists will speak for up to 10 minutes about their entries and answer questions. This will be a unique opportunity to gain insights into the artist’s process in terms of inspiration, artistic journey, background, and techniques.

There will be a Popular Vote Award determined by art show visitors who will have the opportunity to cast ballots during the run of the show. The winners will be determined after the show’s end.

DIANE CASTLE BABCOCK

Diane Castle Babcock has been practicing the art of linoleum block printing for almost fifty years. The process she uses is called the reduction method, because she continually cuts away from one block to create a multiple color image. Her images are created in four to six steps of cutting and printing. As the print is created, the block is destroyed, ensuring a limited edition. Diane has received awards at the Clothesline Festival, Corn Hill Art Festival, Artists Row, and Colorscape Chenango and is a juried member of the Roycroft Arts and Craftsmen Guild.

LAURA WILDER

Laura has been a Roycroft Renaissance Artisan specializing in block printing for nearly thirty years. The prints are created by doing a separate hand-carving for each color, and printing the inked carvings on a hand-cranked letterpress. This method is a laborious adventure, which Laura shares in her e-newsletter at [email protected]. Occasionally she tires of the rigors of printmaking and switches to painting—in oils or gouache.
